Anchored in Landscapes

David Bridgeman and Chris Mann

17 Feb – 24 Mar 2005

Exhibition

Anchored in Landscapes explored the work of featured artists David Bridgeman and Chris Mann: both abstract painters who share an abiding preoccupation with landscape as the main thematic focus of their respective practices. Pairing two artists who possess a stylistic affinity as much as a common subject, Anchored in Landscapes investigated the ways both have challenged traditional conceptions of the landscape genre by venturing beyond idealised representations of nature to address a variety of ideological issues—from questions of identity to themes of nationality and transformation. Utilising an expressionist style that incorporates the colours and iconography of Caribbean culture—while at the same time referencing the natural landscapes that define the Caymanian experience—the works in this exhibition reflected the artists’ varying attempts to convey personal and universal messages, as well the symbolic visual language of their chosen medium.
