Protecting Caymanian art for future generations.

About

The National Gallery is charged with managing, conserving, exhibiting and promoting the National Art Collection, in addition to actively acquiring works of art of national significance. The NGCI Permanent Art Collection is centered on a core of quality Caymanian artworks and supplemented with additional works from the region and abroad. The collection incorporates a wide variety of media and illustrates the ways in which artists have captured both the ordinary and extraordinary aspects of life in the Cayman Islands over a period of 40 years.

The works below form part of NGCI’s Permanent Art Collection.

Blue Meridian: 80 degrees W, Old Isaac’s (2009) by Davin Ebanks

The 'Blue Meridian' series was inspired by the artist's maritime heritage (he is fifth generation of a fishing family). "80 degrees W, Old Isaac's' is one of several studies of the ocean in which the artist created rectangular glass castings with polished sides, glassy, wind-blown surfaces, or granulated ridges. This particular work renders the illusion that turquoise water is miraculously suspended in the air, is if a piece of ocean had been frozen in time. Ebanks obtained a graphic design degree in glass sculpture from Kent State University, Ohio. To explore his personal and cultural history, he utilises the difficult medium of glass, which has won him university teaching posts, artist-in-residence invitations, exhibitions, and prizes, including in July 2014, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands' first sculptural commission for the new site.
