Casting Nets is one of a series of artworks commissioned by the National Gallery as part of the 2010 21st Century Cayman exhibition, which sought to reimagine aspects of our traditional heritage in the contemporary experience. Using the iconic catboat sail canvas as a medium for contemporary art is an attempt to connect past to present. As the title suggests, Seffer’s image is an abstract representation of the act of fishing — historically a defining aspect of the Caymanian cultural experience.

About the Artist
Mikael Seffer

b. 1974

Born in the United States, Mikael Seffer moved to the Cayman Islands as a child, an experience that left an indelible mark on his artwork. A self-taught artist, he began painting in earnest in the early 2000s, quickly developing a unique technique that combines paint, powdered pigments, and resin, which are manipulated by pouring and tilting the canvas. Seffer has shown his work at the Art@Governor’s festival, as well as frequently exhibiting with the Visual Arts Society, The Gallery at The Ritz-Carlton — Grand Cayman and at Kennedy Gallery in Grand Cayman. His work is featured in Art of the Cayman Islands, the Islands’ first formal art history (Scala Fine Art Publishers Ltd.: Fall 2016). NGCI exhibitions include 21st Century Cayman (2010), Our Story of Art (2013), and All Access (2015).
