The stunning terrestrial landscape of the Cayman Islands has provided a source of creativity for island-based artists for as long as painting has been practiced here. From the delicate mangroves of our native wetlands to the diversity of endemic and migratory bird species that call our Islands home, generations of artists have attempted to capture the essence of Cayman’s varied scenery, as well as the elusive quality of light and atmosphere that permeates our shores.
Drawing primarily from the National Gallery’s permanent collection, the featured artworks the ways in which artists have documented, researched, and celebrated the rich assortment of flora and fauna in our Islands. Depicting the scenery of our everyday experience – the riotous of colour of abundant tropical flora and lush vegetation – The Art of Nature provides a visual record of a rapidly changing physical and cultural environment, while meditating on the act of looking itself.
Formally referred to as the National Collection, this public collection is held in trust for the people of the Cayman Islands and is jointly overseen by the Islands’ three national cultural organisations: the National Gallery (NGCI), the Cayman Islands National Museum (CINM) and the Cayman National Cultural Foundation (CNCF). Collectively, these organisations are charged with preserving and promoting the visual and performing arts of and in the Cayman Islands, while providing a platform for displaying historical and contemporary expressions of Caymanian cultural heritage.
