Land and Sea

Picturesque Scenes from the National Collection

14 Apr – 26 May 2022

Exhibition

As an island nation whose boundaries are entirely defined by our surrounding shoreline—the meeting point of land and sea—the convergence of these two elements has provided a constant source of inspiration to those who call these Islands home.

From detailed studies of Cayman’s lush tropical scenery, to panoramic views of the clear and sometimes turbulent waters that encircle our shores, the works on display reflect a host of creative approaches to conveying the ‘picturesque’ qualities of light, colour and atmosphere that define our everyday experience of the natural world.

Drawing predominantly from a circle of artists active during the 1980s and 90s, this exhibition traces the evolution of the local arts scene through the emergence of the Visual Arts Society in the late 1970s—when the versatility and widespread popularity of watercolour led to its becoming the medium of choice for many local artists. Representing an enduring celebration of Caymanian culture and heritage, the featured artworks capture an abiding sense of tranquillity that is still sought after and found here to this day.
