Art Haven 2020/2021

1 Apr – 1 Aug 2021

About This Exhibition

This exhibition celebrates the artistic achievements of Art Haven programme participants at Northward and Fairbanks prisons, Caribbean Haven rehabilitation centre and Bonaventure Boys’ Home. Despite the year’s global challenges, which required the suspension of in-person classes from March through early fall of 2020, participants completed virtually disseminated art lessons, producing an impressive body of work that ranges from Impressionistic landscapes to realism and graphite portraits. Their dedication has culminated in a vibrant and varied expression of creativity and skill development.

About Art Haven

As an inclusive organisation that honours the Cayman Islands’ artistic heritage, celebrates art and seeks to provide learning experiences for all our diverse public, the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands is committed to ensuring accessibility and inclusivity in all that we do. Our outreach programmes aim to engage with those who feel alienated from mainstream social experiences, education, and employment, including incarcerated, rehabilitating, and at-risk individuals.

Research indicates that the arts have the capacity to positively transform lives. Art practice offers opportunities for individuals to explore their potentials and interests, improve visual communication skills, engage with other cultures, and apply a disciplined work ethic through creativity. NGCI’s Art Haven outreach programme actively works to destigmatise programme participants by recognising them as valuable members of our community and by supporting their long-term personal growth.
