Exhibition
A Story in Symbols is an exploration of Caymanian cultural iconography, symbols, and emblems, considering the ways in which these integral motifs play a role in framing the Cayman Islands national identity. The National Symbols are acknowledged by the Cayman Islands Government as The National Flag, Coat of Arms, National Song, Cayman Parrot, Silver Thatch Palm, and the Banana Orchid. Whilst taking these familiar elements as a starting point, the exhibition unpacks their significance further, reflecting on the way in which they are woven into the fabric of Caymanian society.
Acknowledging Caymanian National Symbols as a source of collective pride, the exhibition incorporates a varying stylistic portrayal of our National Flower (The Banana Orchid), National Tree (Silver Thatch Palm), and National Bird (Cayman Parrot). In the same way, the exhibition explores significant iconography from the Coat of Arms and National Song as both a direct illustration and creative interpretation of their subjects. From depictions of historical seafaring traditions to the prosperous rope-making industry, sustaining the early socio-economic development of the Cayman Islands and a source of patriotism for days gone by.
