Description

A Summer of Art • Composition Notebooks
18 July 2017, 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

In this activity students will take a tour of the Gallery’s lower exhibition hall and permanent collection. While on their tour, the students will pick an artwork in the Gallery that they find inspiring. The students will then return to the studio and they will make mixed media drawings on composition notebook paper that illustrates their feelings about their chosen artwork. The students will be able to use an array of drawing materials that the gallery can offer, such as pencils, colored pencils, markers, crayons, pastel and more. At the end of the activity, the students will have their drawings scanned by the gallery instructors and their works will be combined to make an online catalogue that can be downloaded by their family and friends. This activity is inspired by American artist, Jean Michelle Basquiat. Basquiat used to collect his thoughts from his travels and museum visits in composition notebooks and then turn those drawings into larger works. The goal of this activity is to teach students to be engaged viewers as they tour exhibitions. This activity also teaches students about the significance of cataloguing experiences and the importance of artist keeping active notebooks and sketch books.
