YPC Event: Know Thy Selfie: Social Media and Modern Portraits

The National Gallery of the Cayman Islands (NGCI) presents a Young Patrons’ Circle Discussion titled “Know Thy Selfie: Social Media and Modern Portraits”. The event takes place in the NGCI Lower Exhibition Hall, Wednesday, 26 July 2017 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM. Doors open at 5:30 PM.

Topics include:

  • How do selfies portray race/ethnicity, social/economic status, sexuality, and gender?
  • Do selfies/social media posts qualify as art?
  • What choices do you make to present yourself and what does this say about you: clothing, pose, facial expression?
  • How do you frame the picture to construct meaning about your image/brand?
  • Do the image/images portray one identity trait more than others?

The round-table discussion will be moderated by NGCI’s Assistant Curator, Kerri-Anne Chisholm who recently curated the temporary exhibition, Mediating Self now on show at the National Gallery. Admission is free and open to everyone. Refreshments will be served. For additional information email events@nationalgallery.org.ky.
