About Lisa Howie

Lisa Howie is an independent curator and art consultant from Bermuda. She is the former Executive Director of the Bermuda National Gallery (2009 – 2017). During her tenure at BNG she led the organization through two strategic plans; maintained the Bermuda National Standards Certification; piloted the BNG East (a satellite location in St. George’s);secured a partnership with the Vatican’s Ethnological Museum; and developed community partnerships with like-minded organisations from the arts, culture, and social service sectors. Lisa also developed and expanded the Bermuda Biennial and her involvement with exhibitions became central to her leadership as she focused on making the museum an inclusive space that celebrates diversity and innovation. She is co-editor of the International Biennial Association’s (IBA) forthcoming publication.

In 2018, Lisa redefined herself as an independent curator and consultant. Her first show, entitled Marine & Materiality, featured five local women artists at the St. George’s Marina for the Marine Expo. Most recently, she represented three Bermuda artists in the ‘detrás del muro’ pubic art project of the 2019 Havana Biennial, Cuba. Lisa has developed international relationships with museum and gallery professionals in New York, Miami, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Cuba, and Italy. She has spoken about the Bermuda Biennial on a panel at the VOLTA, NY art fair in 2013 and at the IBA General Assembly, in Milan 2016. She was chair of the Bermuda Cultural Heritage Alliance (now dissolved) and a committee leader with the Inter Agency Committee for Children & Families in Bermuda. In 2011, she was an honoree in 100 Women 100 Visions.
