While the National Gallery’s mission is dedicated to showcasing the visual arts, we understand that an artist’s work often draws from a much broader creative landscape, and inspiration comes from a myriad of different sources. For Randy Chollette, whose exhibition Conversations in the 7th Dimension is currently on display, his creative practice is deeply informed by spirituality, rhythm, and movement, as much as it is by visual media. To reflect this multi-disciplinary background, we developed a dynamic programme of events as a key extension of the exhibition experience. This focus on educational outreach allows us to provide the community with diverse ways to engage with the visual arts while building connection and interest in the creative process of different artists.

With this in mind, the Gallery hosted an Afro-fusion dance class led by Mambo Cayman on 20 April, which explored the relationship between music and dance in a fun, welcoming environment. During the lively session, participants learned a series of moves and their historical context, gaining a better understanding of how these traditions inform the artist’s work. Through this collaboration, attendees were able to connect with the exhibition in a new way and left with a keen interest to return for more opportunities to connect with the work through movement.

To complement the exploration of rhythm initiated in the dance class, the Gallery will be hosting an immersive drum circle led by Randy Chollette on Saturday, 02 May, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. This two-hour session was scheduled with the intention of allowing attendees to transition from the role of listener to creator alongside the artist, learning how to build sound through a series of musical phrases. To conclude this musical workshop, Mambo Cayman will provide a brief demonstration illustrating how the drum serves as a bridge between ancestral rhythms and contemporary expression. These collaborations are designed to bring people together and explore how different artistic styles can enrich one another. We are excited to see the unique energy and collective music that emerges as the community joins Randy in this creative exploration.

Building on this momentum, we are pleased to announce a part two of the Afro-fusion dance class for those who missed the first session or wish to join again. This follow-up will take place on Saturday, 30 May, from 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM, featuring Randy on live drums once again. Open to new and returning participants, we encourage the community to register ahead of time, as spaces are limited and popular.

Moving forward, the National Gallery remains committed to being a space where art is accessible and interactive. Our goal is to continue developing programs that promote appreciation for Cayman’s visual artists, ensuring the Gallery remains a welcoming place for the community to learn, share, and find inspiration together.

Conversations in the 7th Dimension is on view until 10 June 2026. Admission to the gallery and the exhibition is free to all, and opening times are Monday to Saturday 10:00AM – 5:00PM.
