Next Wave: Emerging Voices in Cayman Art – National Gallery and Cayman Art Week Collaborate on New Exhibition Celebrating Young Artists

There’s something especially exciting about seeing a new generation of artists step into the spotlight — and that’s exactly what Next Wave: Emerging Voices in Cayman Art is all about. Presented by the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands in collaboration with Cayman Art Week, this new exhibition celebrates the creativity, perspectives, and talent of young artists aged 16–20 from across the Cayman Islands.

Launched as part of Cayman Art Week’s official opening event, the exhibition is on view in the Dart Auditorium Community Gallery through 12 June 2026. Guests had the opportunity to explore the show from 26 May, and the warm response from visitors made it clear that Cayman’s emerging artists are already making a strong impression.

What makes Next Wave so compelling is the sheer variety of work on display. The exhibition brings together painting, drawing, pen and ink, lino block, photography, ceramic and stone sculpture, mixed media, digital art, performance art, and fashion. Across these different forms, the artists explore personal experience, cultural identity, social observation, and imaginative responses to life in Cayman — creating a show that feels both deeply personal and strikingly relevant.

Curator Lori Peterson says the heart of the exhibition is to showcase the creative perspectives of the upcoming generation and to give young artists the chance to exhibit in a professional museum environment. She notes that the artists featured in Next Wave are responding to the personal, social, and cultural shifts shaping their generation, using art as a way to express complex ideas and emotions. She also highlights the strong response to the exhibition’s open call as further proof that visual art continues to thrive among Cayman’s youth.

More than just an exhibition, Next Wave is an investment in the future of Cayman’s arts community. By giving emerging artists professional exposure through exhibition opportunities, special events, and media coverage, the National Gallery and Cayman Art Week are helping to build confidence, visibility, and momentum for the next generation. That conversation continued beyond the gallery walls in a Compass Media interview featuring Curator Lori Peterson, Project Administrator Gianna Whittaker, and artists Zuri Whittaker and Shamir Jayamanna.
