Caymanite & Geology

Caymanite & Geology

Formed of the mineral Dolomite with trace elements of Iron and Manganese over millions of years, Caymanite is a striking sedimentary rock commonly found in the Cayman Islands. With layered striations of colour that range from white to deep grey and red, it has been used by Caymanian crafters and artists to make jewellery and sculpture. In this video, Geologist Dr. Brian Jones describes the geological process by which Caymanite forms, where it’s frequently found and what it’s composed of. You’ll also hear from craftsman Horacio Esteban, whose sculptural work from Caymanite is included in the National Art Collection.
