On February 10th, 2018 the National Gallery had an exciting visitor: none other than Will Smith himself. In town for a conference, Will decided to swing by to meet the team and hear all about our islands and artwork and the events that shaped them.

In the lower exhibition space was Through Ivan’s Eye, a photography exhibition curated by Natalie Urquhart that featured a collection of images by Gretchen Allen. These images were created from slides that were damaged and remarkably transformed by Hurricane Ivan in 2004, an event that forever shaped the Cayman Islands and it’s inhabitants: evidence of which can be seen in the collection on display in the National Gallery’s Permanent Collection.

In his recent Instagram post, Will Smith talks about the exhibition and the healing power of art.

We hope to see Will back at the National Gallery of the Cayman Islands again soon!
