From Whence We Came

Photographs by D. Randall Blythe | Satellite Exhibition at Health Services Authority

9 Apr 2021 – 31 Jul 2025

Exhibition

For artist D. Randall Blythe, photography is about capturing those split seconds of beauty that constantly occur all around us, yet all too often quietly pass by unnoticed in today’s hectic world. Looking through the viewfinder of his camera, the artist attempts to step outside of himself and truly pay attention to his surroundings.

“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch it — we are going back from whence we came.”
— John F. Kennedy

Drawing inspiration from this quote, the artist says, “the ocean is the most protean landscape on earth; she provides endless and constantly changing artistic subject matter. The variations of light, texture, and colour that the sea provides are infinite. As a surfer, I spend as much time as possible in the ocean, often in the company of others who feel the same deep visceral connection to this original source of all life on earth. Shooting photos of the ocean and those who ride her waves is my attempt at artistically sharing that connection, and hopefully inspiring respect for that universal place ‘from whence we came’.”

This exhibition was curated by Natalie Urquhart and was made possible through the generous support of The Mill Cayman. It travelled to the Cayman Brac Beach Resort, where it was on display from  18 October 2018 to 28 February 2019. The exhibition was subsequently installed as a semi-permanent display at the Health Services Authority’s Specialist Clinic, where it opened on 9 April 2021.
