Cayman Makers celebrates the skill, material knowledge and creative vision embodied in contemporary craft within the National Collection. Bringing together works by some of the Cayman Islands’ most accomplished makers, the exhibition considers craftsmanship not simply as the ability to make an object well, but as a sustained pursuit of professional excellence—a mastery developed through discipline, repetition, experimentation and an intimate understanding of materials.
In Cayman, craft has long been inseparable from everyday life. Earlier generations transformed locally available materials into objects of purpose, beauty and cultural meaning. Knowledge was acquired through observation and practice, passed between generations and refined through use. These traditions established a distinctive visual and material language grounded in resourcefulness, environmental knowledge and the rhythms of island life.
The works presented here emerge from this inheritance while extending beyond it. Through fibre, wood, clay, textiles and other materials, Caymanian makers preserve established techniques, reinterpret familiar forms and develop new approaches to design and expression. Functional objects are elevated through precision and imagination, while sculptural works demonstrate the expanding place of craft within contemporary artistic practice.
