Ceramic Sea Turtles: Adult Ceramics Class with Yonier Powery

In this three-part class with artist Yonier Powery, you’ll learn to craft a Green Sea Turtle from clay, exploring hand-building and glazing technique, texture, shape and colour.

5 September 9am-1pm: Ceramics basics and building your turtle

19 September 9am-12pm: Glazing

26 September 3pm-4pm: Collection of final artwork and feedback session with the instructor

About the Instructor

Trained with a wide range of techniques, from drawing and painting to ceramics and sculpture, Powery’s practice is thematically tied to a contemporary style bridging fantasy and reality, often taking influence from the sea.

Commencing his artistic studies in 1999, he joined the workshop of renowned artist Agustin Villafaña before moving to Wilfredo Lam’s Professional Academy of Visual Arts in the Isle of Youth. He has donated artworks to assist in a variety of community projects and local charities, including the Cayman Islands Cancer Society, and his work can be found in private collections worldwide.

Yonier Powery has featured in numerous exhibitions, including a National Gallery of the Cayman Islands solo show titled Unstoppable Steps (2021) and group exhibitions Cross Currents – 1st Cayman Islands Biennial (2019), Reimagined Futures: 2nd Cayman Islands Biennial (2021), Conversations with the Past in the Present Tense: 3rd Cayman Islands Biennial (2023), and Archipelago – 4th Cayman Islands Biennial (2025).
