Traditional Textiles & Contemporary Art

Traditional Textiles & Contemporary Art

Functionality meets aesthetics in Caymanian traditional textiles, designed for utilitarian purposes but crafted with meticulous detail and style. Some of the most recognisable forms of traditional textiles include yoyo quilting, rag rugging, crochet, pinking-of-the-sheets, sail-making, and netting. Inspired by the cultural significance and form of these fabrics and threads, visual artists in Cayman are beginning to celebrate and reference traditional technique and design in their contemporary art practice. In this video, you’ll learn more about the types of traditional textile commonly found in the Cayman Islands, then hear from artist, poet, and educator Nasaria Suckoo Chollette about how the artistic production of Caymanian elders has inspired her practice.
