This depiction of a Caymanian-built wooden schooner references a long maritime history that can be traced back to the nineteenth century — a moment in which sailing was a defining aspect of life for many in these Islands. A quintessential emblem of Cayman’s proud seafaring past, these vessels were integral to daily life, serving as turtle schooners, cargo vessels, passenger transporters, mail carriers and fishing vessels. Gradually, motor vessels replaced the traditional tall-masted schooners, but today they are an invaluable symbol of local tradition and heritage, harking back to a period in which our Islands’ entire fortune and survival was invariably tied to the sea.
