This watercolour features Cayman’s national tree, the Silver Thatch palm (Coccothrinax proctorii), which is an integral part of the physical and cultural Caymanian landscape. It was created in the wake of the devastation left by Hurricane Ivan. The work featured in the National Gallery’s Watermarks exhibition (2005) when it was acquired and later donated by Appleby.

Penny Clifford

b. 1953

Primarily self-taught, Penny Clifford began drawing and painting plants in earnest in the early 1990s when she illustrated the Wild Trees in the Cayman Islands book published by the National Trust. She was an active member of the local arts scene throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, and her work was featured in NGCI exhibitions Watermarks (2005), All Access (2015), and Tropical Visions (2019).
