Sister Islands' Story

Board members and Gallery staff agreed that we needed to treat the Sister Islands with the same level of importance and dedication as we treat our operations and programming in Grand Cayman. We already had a dedicated volunteer in Cayman Brac, Simone Scott, therefore it was a natural progression to have Simone become a formal member of staff in 2007. This was to ensure our programming could blossom on all three islands.

In the past year and a half, Simone holds many of her workshops, art camps and courses out of the Heritage House; including workshops for the elderly, traditional craft making courses and shown art films with an accompanying discussion. Also, the great outdoors offers an inspirational plug in for artistic expression with a few classes being held at parks, near the beaches and even at the highest point on the Bluff..
.
Whenever possible, Gallery staff travel back and forth to offer support for art camps reeling in large numbers of children who are interested in the visual arts.Simone also curates inspiring exhibitions of participants work. Films are shown over in Little Cayman with the help of local artists and our friends at the National Trust.

Sister Islands News

Summer camp inspires young artists

Children of all ages on Cayman Brac came together for a weekend of inspirational and educational art activities at the National Gallery Sister Islands Brac Art Camp on Saturday, 29th August. The camp held at the Brac Heritage House allowed students to experience activities which teach the use of various techniques in painting, drawing, printmaking and textile arts - all in an outdoor environment.

Led by experienced art teacher, Jessica Wallace (the new Education and Outreach Coordinator for the Gallery) and assisted by National Gallery Sister Islands Officer, Simone Scott, students were able to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of art, as well as develop their own talents for self-expression.

Each art station at the camp included a variety of projects designed to enhance student motivation and identified artists, movements, media and methods including value scales, pointillism, brush strokes, and portraiture. Ms. Wallace commented, "The kids were enthusiastic and eager to learn". She continued, "The people were welcoming and warm, it was a wonderful atmosphere for creating art".

One of the main lessons was appreciation of culture and aesthetic awareness using techniques inspired by well known artists such as Vincent Van Gogh, Georgia O'Keefe, and Georges Seurat.

The National Gallery provides all materials for its Sister Island's programming with the help of local sponsors and donors.
