bludragonBlue Dragon Project

Cayman’s indigenous Blue Iguana has become an endangered species, with only a few known adults in the wild on Grand Cayman. In response to these alarming statistics the National Gallery, in partnership with the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, created the Blue Dragon Project, a year-long art and educational programme designed to enlighten residents and visitors about this rare species and to mobilise both the school and adult communities to actively work to save the Cayman Blue Iguana.
The project began with the construction of twenty 8 foot by 3 ½ foot (approximately) fiberglass “blues”, that were painted by local artists and positioned around the island in public spaces along with a plaque that will give information about the “blue”.

School programming around the project was extensive. Students were encouraged to visit the Blue Dragon Project workshop to not only watch and speak with the artists, but to learn the facts about the “blue”. Printed information was distributed to all schools along with opportunities offered for presentations on the Cayman blue iguana in either school assemblies or individual classrooms.

Each “blue” now has a permanent home around the island, the locations of which are illustrated in a colourful, interactive Blue Dragon Trail map designed by the Department of Tourism.

The overall funding for this project was provided by the Dart Foundation, with each dragon being “adopted” by individuals or businesses upon completion. The Blue Dragons were kindly adopted by Walker’s, the Dart Foundation, Bank Austria, Butterfield Bank, The Ritz Carlton, Deidre Billes, Andrew and Jane Moon and Family, James and Leslie Bergstrom and Harriet Hunter.

The National Trust and the National Gallery believe that with this campaign, the awareness level of the plight of the Cayman blue iguana will be heightened to such an extent that public funding will be in place to continue the National Trust’s current Blue Iguana breeding programme.
